The Holiday

Arthur : Iris, in the movies we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason you are behaving like the best friend.
Iris: You’re so right. You’re supposed to be the leading lady of your own life, for god’s sake!

The quote is taken from the movie ‘The Holiday (2006)’.
I do believe you have watched that movie maybe for 7839 times like me. Not only the movie has become my watch list every Christmas, but also it has reminded me over and over to stand out for myself by the end of the year – iykyk.

This heartwarming movie, with its charming premise of two women swapping homes, really spoke to me on a personal level. Not for the glamorous settings, but more for the deeper longing for another perspective – can be a new one, an opportunity to rediscover myself and definitely the unexpected joys that may arise when having adventure beyond the comfort zone.

Here are my six takeaways after watching again The Holiday (2006) this year.

  1. Self care is essential
Amanda (Cameron Diaz) decided to leave her fast paced world behind for a quiet English cottage somehow resonated deeply with me. It is a gentle reminder that most of the time we are often conditioned to put everyone else’s needs first. This movie reminds us that it is okay to take a break, to create space for ourselves and to explore what makes us happy. It is okay to prioritize ourselves and it is not selfish at all.
  2. Embrace the change
Iris (Kate Winslet) manifested the courage to step out from our comfort zones. The way she swapped homes with Amanda led her to a new environment, new friends and a fresh perspective too! Sometimes, all it takes is a bravery to embrace a little change. As simple as redecorating a room or maybe starting a new hobby just for the sake to rejuvenate our lives. It reminded me the joy i found in traveling : every trip is a chance to see life differently.
  3. Find joy in the every day
The beauty of simplicity in this movie can be seen from the cozy cottages, quiet walks and heartfelt conversations. Most of the time, it is not grand gestures but small and mindful moments that bring the greatest joy. Life’s greatest joys often come from the everyday moments, like a quiet afternoon with a cup of tea or precious time spent with loved ones. Indeed, the little things truly matter.
  4. Healthy relationships should bring out the best for each other.
Both Amanda and Iris have a complicated relationship that doesn’t truly fulfill their needs. Their journeys were a poignant reminder that each of us deserve connections that bring joy and encourage each other to be their best self. Healthy relationships aren’t only about love; they also prioritize mutual respect and growth.
  5. Seize new opportunities
The idea of exchanging homes for the holidays was unique and surprisingly liberating. This showed me on how stepping out from routines – even just for a while, can be refreshing for the mind and soul. This inspires us to be adventurous and seize new opportunities be it planning that dream getaway or try something completely different.
  6. Your best chapters are yet to come
Another favorite characters of mine is Arthur Abbott, the elderly screenwriter who encouraged Iris to embrace herself as the leading lady in her own story. This is a heartwarming reminder that life’s story continues to unfold, and there are always new chapters waiting to be written. Remember to always spare room for new chapters. No matter our age or where we find ourselves.

The Holiday might be a rom-com, yet it explores universal themes of self – discovery, resilience and joy that appeal to a wider audience. Living nomadically, as a housewife, a traveller and a mindfulness enthusiast, has profoundly inspired me to embrace change, cherish the present, and live my story up to the fullest.
