Malang, a city of coffeeshops
-unknown-
One of my favorite things as a nomadic housewife is exploring local markets. Now that we’re in Malang, I’m eager to experience its famous traditional markets, Oro – oro dowo and Klojen.
Oro – oro dowo : A nostalgic journey
The sights, smells, and tastes of Malang’s commercial life come alive at Oro-Oro Dowo Market. Located centrally, this market greeted me with a feast for the senses: vibrant produce, aromatic spices, and a tempting array of local snacks, all presented with evident pride.
You can find nasi pecel (rice served with spicy peanut sauce and a variety of vegetables), wedang jahe (ginger tea), and of course, bakso (meatball soup) – a true Malang specialty.
But it’s not just about the food – the market is also a great place to experience the warmth of Malang’s locals. I had a wonderful conversation with one of the vendors who shared the story of how her family has been running the stall for generations. It was such a beautiful moment that reminded me how important it is to support local businesses and keep traditions alive.
My journey through the market took me past stalls overflowing with traditional herbal remedies, local food, and wooden handicrafts. The vibrant hues of local fruits, from the bright orange salak (snake fruit) to the delicate green guava, caught my eye. And the air, thick with the scent of fresh spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and cloves, was a sensory delight.
Klojen Market : A Blend of Old and New
My next stop was Klojen Market, a place where tradition and modernity meet, offering a diverse range of goods from fresh produce and spices to fresh vegetables, slow-bar coffee, and modern food stalls.
I loved the feeling of energy at Klojen Market. The market was alive with vendors enthusiastically presenting their goods and shoppers engaging in lively bargaining, creating a scene that truly reflected the heart of Malang.
Klojen’s streets are a haven for food lovers. The air is filled with the enticing aroma of street food, from savory rawon to the diverse offerings of tofu. I succumbed to the temptation of some tofu, and it was an experience I won’t soon forget – a flavorful and satisfying indulgence.
Oro-Oro Dowo and Klojen markets offer a richer experience than simply shopping. They provide a glimpse into the culture, history, and daily lives of Malang’s residents. By taking the time to engage with vendors, listen to their stories, and absorb the market’s atmosphere, you’ll discover the unique character of each.
For me, these immersive experiences are what make travel so rewarding. It’s not just about seeing the sights, but about connecting with local culture and developing a deeper understanding of the places I visit. I encourage everyone to venture beyond the typical tourist attractions and fully embrace the vibrant tapestry of Malang’s traditional markets. These markets offer a chance to connect with locals, learn about their traditions, and appreciate life’s simple pleasures, often reminding us that the most memorable experiences are found in the most unexpected corners.
