Housewife Hustle

She genuinely wanted to be a good mother and a housewife. She works for it.

I resigned in 2019, leaving behind a career in the education industry that I had embarked on since 1999. I made the decision to become a full-time housewife, accompanying my husband as we now embrace a nomadic lifestyle.

Initially, adjusting to life as a stay-at-home wife wasn’t easy. I was completely out of my depth, especially when it came to cooking – I didn’t even know how to properly cook rice! Haggling in the wet market also proved to be a daunting challenge, leaving me feeling quite frustrated in the beginning. However, I learned and adapted. Now, five years after resigning from my career, I understand that even housewives need to set goals, plan their days, and regularly review their progress to ensure their household tasks are both productive and fulfilling.

I learned that productivity as a housewife can be much more about how we approach our daily life, how we show up for ourselves and our families and the most important thing is how we integrate mindfulness into our routines. Here are three key ways to redefine productivity as a housewife by embracing a more holistic approach, one that nourishes our minds, bodies, and spirits alongside our homes – my version.

  1. Embrace the power of the present moment
The constant pressure on the more we do, the more we accomplish – can pull us away from the present. Yet, true productivity comes from creating spaces that foster peace and clarity, both in your home and in your mind. Imagine the difference between mindlessly folding clothes while worrying about dinner, and truly being present in the act of folding, appreciating the feel of the fabric and the satisfaction of a neatly organized drawer. This simple action is actually called moving meditation.

So, next time you fold a towel, take a moment to feel the fabric, notice the folds, and appreciate the simple beauty of the process. Focus on the present moment that allows you to connect with the task. This mundane chores may transform into meaningful rituals that help you to get the sense of fulfillment rather than stress or frustration.
  2. Prioritize Self Care
As a housewife, sometimes we feel that our role is solely centered around taking care of our family and managing the home. At least, that’s how I see myself at home. But, you know what? productivity means taking care of yourself too. Investing in your well – being – mentally, emotionally, physically – is not selfish. It’s essential for creating a harmonious and productive home environment. Mindful self-care can take many forms, from practicing yoga, to reading, or simply taking a few moments to breathe deeply and reconnect with yourself.

Remember, we can’t pour from an empty cup. By prioritizing self-care, you create a balance that allows you to show up more fully for your family and your responsibilities. This kind of productivity is about taking the time to recharge so that you can be your best self, not just a caretaker. And yes, you deserve that. So, schedule time for activities that replenish your energy, whether it’s a relaxing bath, a walk in nature, or simply curling up with a good book. When we approach self-care with mindfulness, we are not only improving our own well-being, but also setting a positive example for those around us on the importance of mental and emotional health.
  3. Celebrate Small Wins
This is one of my favourites. As housewives, our daily efforts —whether it’s keeping the house clean, managing the family budget, or finding time for self-care—often go unnoticed, but these small wins are just as significant as any big achievement. Did you manage to squeeze in a quick workout between errands? Did you declutter a drawer and find forgotten treasures? Celebrate these small wins!

Celebrating them helps build momentum, boosts our sense of accomplishment, and reinforces our self-worth. Acknowledging even the smallest victories not only combats burnout but also fuels motivation, reminding us that every task, no matter how routine, contributes to a bigger purpose. By taking the time to honor these quiet triumphs, we stay grounded, motivated, and more connected to the value we bring to our families and homes.

Ultimately, being productive as a housewife doesn’t have to be about striving for an endless to-do list or constantly feeling pressured to achieve more. It’s about cultivating a deeper connection with ourselves, our families, and our homes. By embracing mindfulness in our daily routines, we can transform mundane tasks into meaningful moments. We learn to savor the present, appreciate the beauty in the everyday, and find joy in the simple act of being. This intentional approach not only enhances our efficiency but also fosters a sense of peace, balance, and deep fulfillment within our homes.
